Jenny Jones Cake
There is nothing I like better than repeat business and earlier this year I received one of my most exciting commissions to date. Back in 2010 I received a call from Jenny Jones’ parents after she won her second Gold Medal at The X Games. They asked me to create a congratulations cake for her as they were very proud of her achievement. I remember very fondly the enjoyable consultation that I had with them to design her cake. After the event I was lucky enough to meet her too.
Having met her and her lovely parents it was with great pleasure that I watched her win her Bronze Medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Little did I know that I was about to hear from her parents again.
The design grew from looking at the images of Jenny after she won her medal standing with the Union flag behind her. This whole process was undertaken by phone and email as the lead time was very short and the cake was to be the centrepiece at a party to celebrate her achievement when she returned to the UK. The cake included a caricature model of Jenny holding the snowboard on which she won her medal. I looked at images of the design on her snowboard and hand painted the details onto the model. The cake was based on a three tier sponge cake which I carved to form a snowboard track including some of the elements from Sochi. I am very proud to have been a tiny piece of this historic event.
