Back to the Future 30th Birthday Cake
When Catherine asked me to make a 30th birthday cake for Jon I was delighted as I have created cakes for her in the past. This year was one of the dreaded ‘zero’ birthdays for Jon and so she wanted something light hearted. Jon is a big fan of 1980’s films and ‘Back to the Future’ is one of his favourites.
By picking out the dominate colours in the logo I was able to make a striking but unfussy birthday cake. The cake was made from 2 round tiers of chocolate sponge filled with rich chocolate butter cream. I hand painted the logo onto the front of the lower tier and finished the top with a display of 30’s and hand-made sugar stars. This cake design shows how it is often better not to include the words ‘Happy Birthday’ as they are totally unnecessary, and would only make the cake more cluttered, so I simply placed his name on the top tier. I know that it was the much admired centre piece for their family party and I received many compliments on the flavor of the cake as well as its design.
